The Kagisano-Molopo Local Municipality will host the 2017 United Nations International Day of Cooperatives in Bokone Bophirima Province at Phaphosana Community Hall, near Ganyesa.
The municipality spokesperson, Thomas Matlapeng said day is celebrated worldwide.
“In its resolution 47/90 of 16 December 1992, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed that International Day of Cooperatives will be celebrated annually on the first Saturday of July. The 2017 International Day of Cooperatives will focus on inclusion under the theme: Cooperatives ensure no one is left behind, which complements the priority theme of the 2017 high-level Political Forum for Sustainable Development, ‘eradicating poverty and promoting prosperity in a changing world’
“The objective of the day is also to motivate local communities to form cooperatives as a way of economic empowerment and self-dependence. The theme above sings from the same hymn book as the Bokone Bophirima Provincial Government’s VTSD concrete which has the objectives of fighting the triple challenges of poverty, unemployment and inequality among our people,” Matlapeng said.
He further said that the day coincides with Kagisano-Molopo Local Municipality’s planned launch of its VTSD industrialisation projects and showcasing of over a hundred cooperatives predominantly comprised of young people and women.
Matlapeng added that the municipality has set aside more than R9 million for its Local Economic Development projects like Goat Massification, Recycling and Tourism, and prepared at least 70 cooperatives to that effect.
“These are ‘Go Thethebana’ projects as announced by mayor, Bitsa Lenkopane during her State of the Municipal Address (SOMA) in May. Go Thethebana’ is a Setswana phrase that means getting full or satisfied beyond limit,” he said.
The event will commence at 9am.
